The Kokomo Post 6 senior baseball team dropped a pair of games to Valparaiso College Prep Post 94 on Sunday at Highland Park.

In the opening game, Valparaiso University recruit Jack Wheeler pitched Valpo to a 5-1 win. The Sixers managed just three hits. Troy Smith took the loss. He pitched five innings, allowed seven hits and four earned runs, struck out three and walked three.

Valpo beat Kokomo 14-6 in the second game. Isaac Russell went 3 for 5 to lead the Sixers, Cayden Calloway was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, Peyton DeWeese was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Cooper Smith drove in two runs and Corbyn Sparling and Xavier Williams each had an RBI.

Dylan Pearson was the losing pitcher. He allowed eight hits and eight earned runs over three innings. He struck out three and walked three.

“We were coming off a week-long break and facing a really tough opponent that we hadn’t played before this year,” Kokomo skipper Nathan Kirk said. “I thought we played really well that first game. We had a couple mishaps, but Troy Smith pitched a really good game. We only had three hits — their pitcher dealt really well. He shut us down.

“The second game, they had a couple home runs that put them over the top. Dylan didn’t have his best outing. Fortunately, our bats woke up and we hit more that game, but they played better baseball than us.”

Kokomo (8-15) had won five games in a row before dropping its last three games.

The Sixers play Crawfordsville Post 72 on Tuesday at North Montgomery High School. From there, the Sixers will play in a tournament at North Montgomery beginning on Thursday to close the regular season. In the Legion state tournament, Kokomo plays in a regional at Frankfort and will open against Lafayette on July 19.

“I think if we can get it going [this week], that will lead us into the regional,” Kirk said. “I’m confident that our guys are going to get it together. I honestly think when we’re going on all cylinders and we’re there to play, we’re a tough team to beat.”
