WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Emma Gu. It’s a name we’ve heard over the last several years. She’s taken the greater Lafayette area by storm with her skills on and off the court, and now, she will be taking her talents to the Navy.

Gu has been committed to the United States Naval Academy ever since January of 2023. So, when signing day came around later that year in the fall, she was very excited to make things official.

Gu said, “Signing day, writing my speech, like putting those words to paper and getting to say them I think is something that gets overlooked a lot. Like you don’t really get a chance to like sit down and say thank you to these people. So I’m just grateful, and I’m excited to see what happens in the future.”

Well, the future holds a lot of travel for Gu once graduation happens in the spring. Once she walks across the stage, she’ll travel over 600 miles to the Naval Academy.

Gu told Sports 18 that being far from home would be a new experience for her. However, it’s an experience she’s been excited to take ever since she stepped foot on campus.

Gu said, “I talked to a lot of different coaches during recruiting and I took a couple of visits and I think once I took my visit and I stepped on campus and was able to see like firsthand just the caliber of people there, and the schedule and how the team interacted I knew like this was a place I wanted to be in.”

Starting her journey out to the East is just over the horizon. However, Gu said she still has a lot to look forward to before leaving home.

After all, the 2024 Tennis season is set to kick off, and Gu wants to end her time at Harrison on a positive note.

Gu said, “This season I’m really just trying to like have fun. Especially because like it’s in the spring, I feel like it’ll be also trying to like enjoy the last days I have until I go move like 500 miles away. but I think like overall I just want to have fun and enjoy like my last couple of months here with my friends and my team.”
