WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) â The Rossville Hornets defeated the two-time defending champions, Tecumseh Braves in a 2-1 comeback victory on Saturday evening at Bittinger Stadium.Â
Claiming its first ever state title, Sports 18 caught up with the team following the game.Â
âItâs all a blur! It will continue to be a blur. Weâve said weâre not done, and thatâs been our motto since sectionals started and thatâs what they did today, It showed in the sixth inning that we werenât finished and we werenât done until it was over,â head coach, Chris Gorbett told Sports 18.Â
After being down 1-0 in five innings, it was two huge runs that secured the lead for the Hornets in the 6th.
To capitalize on that, the senior center, Cortney Huffman, stepped up in the 7th with a catch to give the Braves three outs!
âI got a jump on it and I read it well, so I was pretty excited about that! In my head, right before the pitch, I was like just catch the ball. Thatâs all you have to do â we have two outs. Just catch the ball if it hit to you. Do what you know to do. When it was coming down I was like, just squeeze your mitt and then you can celebrate!â She explained.Â
The senior third baseman, Megan McDonald, described what made this team different from the rest.Â
âThis is the thing about our group of girls. We donât get worried that much. We hold our composure and we just keep playing our game and thatâs what makes us such a good team. We never get worried about anything. We always just know we got this,â McDonald said.Â
Still on cloud nine, Coach Gorbett thanks his team and staff for their efforts.
âWe worked hard to get here today and I appreciate all of their effort. My coaching staff, myself and the amount of hours that we put in. Itâs huge. It takes pride and ownership and thatâs what they did. They took pride in their name thatâs on the front of their shirt and the one thatâs on their back.â
Rossville finished the 2024 season with 28 wins and only 3 losses.Â
